Why a Rainbow?

Updated: Jul 2, 2020

The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBT+ pride and LGBTQ social movements. The colours reflect the diversity of the LGBT community. LGBTQ individuals currently use rainbow flags and rainbow themed items as an outward symbol of their identity or support. It‘s generally used as a symbol of social equality and individuality. The design of this flag has undergone a lot of changes since it first came out in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. The traditional and most common variant consists of six colours; red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. The flag is flown horizontally with the red stripe at the top representing a natural rainbow.

But what do the colours represent?

Red = Life,

Orange = healing,

Yellow = Sunlight,

Green = Nature,

Blue = Harmony,

Violet = Spirit.
